Patches and Stitches
Patches and Stripes 2022
Size 60” x 70”
If you are familiar with the quilts that we have offered as a “stitch along” through the year, you will see that this one is different. It is more contemporary than our usual traditional designs. I guess the Pandemic got us thinking “outside the blocks”. The actual blocks in this quilt are simple basic blocks that do not require any advanced skills to make.
The inspiration for this design/arrangement is a pattern by an Australian quilter, Jen Kingwell, initially named Gypsy Wife Quilt but is sometimes referred to as the Wandering Wife Quilt. If you “google” either of those names and hit the “image” button, you will see the Gypsy Wife in many different colors. To be sure that we did not violate any copyright laws, our arrangement and blocks are different from those in the Gypsy Wife Quilt. The ones you see on line are all the same pattern in different colors.
Ours quilt is designed in 12 sections. Some sections require more time to complete than others. You must complete each section including setting the blocks together with the setting stripes in order to pick up the next section.
Fabric Requirements:
-
½ yd of a theme fabric (optional)
-
5 ½ yards of fabric to make the blocks (we used 22 fat quarters)
-
3 yds. (total) for the 1 ½” (cut) strips (we used 1 ½ yds. each of two colors). If you use black and white strips in your quilt, we have available to purchase pre-cut strips in rolls. You will need one roll of each color. The trade name of these pre-cut strips is Honey Buns. They come in a variety of colors but we only have black and white.
Our model measures 60” x 70” but you can add borders if you prefer a larger quilt.
You could also make it longer by making your 1” finished strips longer in the bottom sections. The quilt has 3”, 4”, 5”, 6”, 8”, 9”, 10”, and 12” blocks. If you do not like a block pattern that is provided, feel free to substitute a different block of the same size. There are tons of free block patterns on the internet or you can repeat one you have already used.

-
Go home and make Section 1.
-
Bring the Section 1 in and show us you made it and pick up Section 2.
-
Continue making one Section at a time and bring them in for more patterns until you have completed all 12 Sections
*** You can work at your own pace as far as picking up patterns, but you are not allowed to pick up more than one time each day. So if you want to have a quilting marathon in January, you could be done by the end of the month.
As a little incentive, we will give the first 20 folks who bring in a completely finished quilt (quilted and bound) a $20 gift certificate.
